I recently returned from a weeklong amateur adult chamber music program at Kneisel Hall, a picturesque, wooded campus in Blue Hill, Maine and renowned summer institute founded by Franz Kneisel in 1902.
It was my first time, as a violist, playing in various ensembles, interacting with other string players and pianists from all over the country that come with different playing abilities.
A typical day consisted of rehearsing our assigned piece, sight reading, socializing, and attending stellar performances in the evening. Most of all, I experienced the pure joy of making beautiful music.
I met some wonderful faculty members including Scott Woolweaver, a fine violist and program director, who offered his expertise and enthusiasm when coaching during rehearsals. I also had some of the faculty play through my own compositions which was thrilling for me.
Reflecting upon this experience, I realize the important role that playing the viola and composing music has in my life. I continue to appreciate the fulfillment music offers me and am already looking forward to participating in Kneisel Hall again next summer.
